Hogan proposes requiring larger employers to offer paid sick leave

December 7th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

Gov. Larry Hogan said Wednesday he will introduce legislation in the upcoming General Assembly session that would require businesess with more than 50 employees to offer paid sick leave.

The Republican governor said smaller businesses will not be required to offer their workers paid sick leave, but if they do, will be eligible for tax breaks.

Mike O'Halloran is the Maryland state director of the National Federation of Independent Business. He said the proposal protects small businesses from the proposed mandate but also gives them "reason to be alarmed."

He said requiring mandatory paid leave would result in "fewer jobs in Maryland."
