Investigation underway after Maryland Congressman found armed at House metal detectors

January 23rd, 2021 by WCBC Radio

WBAL reports Capitol police are reportedly investigating a report of Rep. Andy Harris trying to bring a gun onto the House floor Thursday afternoon during a House vote.

HuffPost reports that the gun was detected after Harris was wand scanned by an officer with a metal detector. The gun in question was concealed by his suit coat.

Metal detectors on the House floor have been in place since Jan. 12, following the riots that took place on Jan. 6.

Harris reportedly tried to have Rep. John Katko take his gun from him. Katko said he did not have a license.

A representative for the U.S. Capitol Police told HuffPost that due to “an ongoing investigation," they could not comment on the matter.

Harris' office has since issued his own statement on the matter.

"Because his and his family's lives have been threatened by someone who has been released awaiting trial, for security reasons, the Congressman never confirms whether he nor anyone else he's with are carrying a firearm for self-defense," reads the statement.

"As a matter of public record, he has a Maryland Handgun Permit. And the congressman always complies with the House metal detectors and wanding. The Congressman has never carried a firearm on the House floor."

Under a longstanding regulation, House members are not allowed to carry firearms on the floor of either house of Congress.
