It appears lawmakers in Annapolis once again will be debating legislation that would essentially legalize the recreational use of cannabis in Maryland. However, it could be in for an uphill battle with Delegate Mike McKay one of the leading opponants. House Bill 32 would legalize, tax, and regulate marijuana, referred to as cannabis in the bill, for adults 21 and older and also allow for expungement and release for individuals previously arrested or incarcerated. The bills sponsor, Prince Georges Delegate Jazz Lewis, argued at the hearing that the bill would take the production of cannabis off of the streets to ensure safer products, while simultaneously creating jobs, helping small businesses, and bringing in potentially hundreds of millions of dollars in annual tax revenue. Delegate McKay, who philosophically opposes any legislation that could expand the use of drugs such as marijuana, said with the state dealing with serious issues relating to the Coronavirus pandemic- now is not the time to be considering such proposals…
