MDE Issues “stringent” permit for Proposed Potomac Pipeline

March 16th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

The Maryland Department of the Environment Friday issued a state wetlands and waterways permit for the proposed Columbia Gas pipeline in Western Maryland that includes customized conditions specific to the project and its location to ensure protection of public health and the environment.  MDE Secretary Ben Grumbles noted that the criteria are stringent and the pipeline will not move forward unless the many requirements are met. Meanwhile, environmental groups protested in front of the Capitol building in Annapolis for the second consecutive day. Five protesters were arrested Wednesday by Maryland State Police. The 3½-mile portion of a natural gas pipeline would run west of Hancock and 100 feet under the Potomac River and C&O Canal towpath.
