Saying that she now feels the need to ask her granddaughter if she feels safe each morning before sending her off to Mountain Ridge High School- Julia Williams told the Allegany County Board of Education this week that they need to investigate operations and the administration at the school. She made mention of not one, but two cases in recent years where Mountain Ridge teachers were charged with having sexual contact with students; and she also pointed to a recent assault of a child with autism at the school cafeteria. While policy doesn’t allow for board members or the superintendent to comment or respond to questions questions that are asked during the work session- the issue has been addressed in recent interviews with WCBC News. Superintendent David Cox acknowledged that while its unusual for these types of incidents to be occurring at one school- he believes the principal and administration at Mountain Ridge have followed all of the proper protocols and they should not be blamed. He says he doesn’t see any reason for a parent or grandparent to think their kids will be less safe at Mountain Ridge as opposed to other schools in the system…
Board member Wayne Foote however believes it’s becoming clear that something at Mountain Ridge isn’t working- and that needs to be examined…
