On May 26, 2017 the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office conducted a sobriety checkpoint on MD Route 220 (McMullen Highway) in Cresaptown, Maryland. The checkpoint began at approximately 2200 hours on May 26, 2017 and remained in operation until approximately 0200 hours on May 27, 2017. A total of 782 vehicles passed through the checkpoint and all motorists were screened for signs of impairment and provided a safety brochure pertaining to the laws against drinking and driving. No arrests were made relating to DWI/DUI, but several motorists were cited for other traffic offenses.
The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office conducts several sobriety checkpoints throughout the year, in addition to utilizing special enforcement details specifically targeting drunken, drugged, and distracted drivers.
Checkpoints conducted by the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office are part of the Checkpoint Strikeforce campaign and are funded in part by a grant from the Maryland Highway Safety Office.
Traffic crashes continue to be a leading cause of death on Maryland highways. The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office urges drivers to always drive sober, obey the speed limit, wear a seat belt, and eliminate distractions.
