Subject in Custody After Series of Local Thefts

On Thursday, June 23rd, 2021, Officers with the Cumberland City Police Department responded to a residence in the 800 block of Highland Dr for the report of a breaking and entering. Contact was made with the owner of the home who advised that they had been awakened by a male subject who had entered their home unlawfully through an unlocked door. The suspect then entered the bedroom of the home. The homeowner advised the male suspect informed them they had just been at the property to help a female in distress. The male suspect then left the home without further incident. Security camera footage from the home was able to show a white male suspect who was seen leaving the area in a white in color SUV.

A short time later, officers responded to a business in the 700 block of Greene St for the report of destruction to the property. It was discovered that multiple windows on the property had been broken sometime prior to business opening for the day. Security camera footage showed that the same male suspect who had caused the damage to the business.

Officers were able to obtain further information on the suspect vehicle used in the previous incidents which led them to an Arnett Terrace residence. Upon arrival, Officers observed that a rear door to the home had been damaged and discovered that this residence had also been burglarized. Further investigation also determined that the vehicle being used by the suspect had been stolen from this residence. An ATL was broadcast for the stolen vehicle.

A short time later, Officers were called to respond to the area of the Cumberland Country Club for the report of a motor vehicle theft. Officers contacted the victim of the theft as well as other witnesses. The victim advised they were inside the business when they were informed that a male subject was actively attempting to steal their black in color Ford truck. They exited the business to find that the truck was already gone. The investigation revealed that the same suspect had arrived at the business in the previously stolen white SUV. The suspect then entered the business and attempted to fraudulently obtain clothing items. The suspect was told to return the items and leave the property. The suspect then stole the aforementioned black ford pick-up and left the area. An updated ATL was then broadcast for the stolen truck. The white SUV was transported to police headquarters for processing. During a subsequent search of the stolen SUV, items from other city residences were located. Further investigation revealed that those homes had also been burglarized earlier in the day.

Later in the day, an officer in the area of Wineow St observed the black in color Ford truck. Officers were able to make contact with the operator of the truck, Nathan Michael Myers, 27, of Cumberland MD. Myers was able to be taken into custody without further incident. He was transported to Police Headquarters for further investigation and processing. Myers was taken before the District Court Commissioner for his Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center.

At this time, the investigation remains open and further charges are pending. The Cumberland Police ask that anyone with information regarding these incidents contact Police Headquarters at 301-777-1600.
