“Troublemakers” force Union Rescue Mission to temporarily stop serving meals

February 21st, 2017 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Times News reports the Union Rescue Mission of Western Maryland, Inc., citing “trouble and fights” has stopped serving meals to the public. “They stopped letting the public eat so now I’m scrounging around for food wherever I can get it,” said Angie Uplinger. Uplinger said she lives on a fixed income and gets $100 worth of food stamps each month. “I was eating lunch and dinner at the mission,” she said. There are homeless people who sleep on the streets, but eat at the mission, according to Uplinger. “And they are hungry as heck,” she said. “Right now (the mission) is all locked up. You can’t get in.”  A sign on a door at the mission reads, “All meals closed to the public!!! This is due to all the trouble and fights, sorry to those who are not the cause of this.” Uplinger said she lives within an easy walk of the mission, which is at 16 Queen City Pavement. Rev. Dan Taylor, former executive director and now president of the board at the mission, told the Cumberland Times-News Tuesday afternoon that a cooling off period is in place.
