United Way nearing end to fund raising effort

May 22nd, 2020 by WCBC Radio

It was announced in February that County United Way’s annual campaign was significantly behind on its fundraising goal. The outlook is not as bleak as it was then when only 50% of the needed dollars had been pledged, however, significant changes will still take place to adjust for losses due to shifts in giving.

County United Way was able to respond swiftly to COVID-19 needs by establishing the COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund, in which 100% of donations were directed to immediate needs. Many of the dollars raised were directed to food services being offered by various organizations, with additional response to necessary changes in programs to ensure individuals and families had continued access to programs. Additional dollars awarded to the organization through grants will allow for ongoing recovery efforts when eviction and utility shut off restrictions are lifted.

It is expected that some traditional programs in the community will face changes to how they operate and United Way is prepared to aid organizations with meeting the requirements to both stay safe and offer their valuable services to those in need. Executive director Juli McCoy shares that “we have continued to monitor the needs of our community from the perspective of current and post-COVID emergencies, while also considering how we can offer the most effective response to ongoing programs, new needs, and what we may face should a second wave of the virus impact us.”

Although it is unlikely that the organization will receive pledges of an additional $30,000 by its extended deadline of June 15, thanks to the generosity of those who have given its work can and will continue to fight for the health, education and financial stability of every local person. It is asked that if anyone is inclined to give that they do so online at cuw.org. Checks continue to be accepted by way of mail at 113A South Centre Street, Cumberland, MD 21502. Those seeking details about United Way are encouraged to reach out to the local office to gain the most accurate, current information as general online searches can lead to misinformation that is not relevant to the local operation.
