UPDATE: I-68 re-opens

August 21st, 2019 by WCBC Radio

On Wednesday just after 4 am the Cumberland Police Department and Cumberland Fire Department responded to east bound I-68 in the area of the crosstown bridge for a report of a tractor trailer on fire.

Upon arrival officers discovered the trailer portion of the vehicle well involved with fire.  The trailer was found to be a refrigerated truck hauling frozen meat products.

The entire interstate was closed for a few hours while CFD with the help of fire units from LaVale, Cresaptown, and Bowman’s Addition extinguished the fire.

Investigation revealed that the truck was owned by Steven’s Transport out of Texas.  The driver advised that he was traveling east bound when he began experiencing mechanical problems and noticed his trailer on fire.  He then stopped the vehicle and unhooked the burning trailer.

The entire interstate was closed for several hours during fire suppression but west bound was eventually re-opened after extinguishment.  East bound was closed today until 12:40 while crews from State Highway Administration and the towing company cleaned the roadway of burnt debris.  The trailer and its contents were a total loss.

The State Highway Administration re-routed traffic off of the interstate in LaVale onto Vocke Road during the event.  The closure of the interstate caused several traffic problems throughout the area.
