W.Va. buck harvest declines

December 6th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Times News reports the buck kill during the two-week firearms season in West Virginia was down by 25 percent compared to one year ago, according to the state's Division of Natural Resources.

Hunters checked in 45,871 antlered deer from the recent season, compared to 60,814 during the 2015 hunt.

Preston County led the way with 1,769 bucks.

Wildlife Chief Paul Johansen said biologists predicted in the Mast Survey and Hunting Outlook brochure that the buck harvest would decrease, primarily because of an increased number of acorns in 2016 compared to acorn crop production in 2015.
