County Similarities Support Secession

Citizens gathered last evening at the Allegany Museum to hear views of a scenario where Allegany, Garrett, and Washington counties would leave Maryland and join West Virginia. A similar idea was floated a view years ago, but no action was taken. Delegate Gary Howell of Mineral County, West Virginia, says policies coming out of Annapolis hurt Allegany County and other urban areas of the state…
“You know, the effective property tax rate – now this is on a $149,000 house in Allegany County is about $1,600 a year. The more expensive $180,000 house in Mineral County is $900 a year.
