Color OUR World This Summer with Allegany County Library System

This summer, the Allegnay County Library System invites readers of all ages to join in the fun with Summer with Our Library 2025: Color OUR World! From June 9th through August 9th, community members can celebrate the joys of reading, learning, and exploration with programs designed for everyone-from babies to adults. Participation is easy: pick up a reading log at any library branch or download one online. Readers can log books, audiobooks, or even bedtime stories and return completed logs to their library for a prize. Children will receive a free book, teens and adults will receive a free tote bag. Every completed log is also entered into the Grand Prize Drawing, to be held on August 22, and participants may submit multiple logs to increase their chances of winning. 


Story Time In the Park

Back by popular demand, the Story Time in the Park series returns this year, starting with an outdoor story time at the Constitution Park Amphitheater on June 12th at 10:00AM. Hosted by ACLS Program Specialists, these engaging story times combine literacy and nature. Families are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs and enjoy books under the open sky. Story times will contine throuhgout the summer in parks and green spaces across Allegany County, including at the George's Creek Parklet behind the library and Creekside Park in Westernport-both of which were recently touched by flooding. "We're committed to showing up for our communitues" said Kate Metzger, Children's Coordinator for the ACLS, "We know how meaningful these momemts of connection and normalcy can be for children and their families. For those who prefer to stay cool indoors, special summer story times will also be held at the LaVale Library on Wednesday, June 4th, July 9th and July 23rd at 10:30AM. In addition to reading incentives and story times, the library will offer a full schedule of special events, including programs at Rocky Gap State Park, Read to Farm Animals at the Allegany County Fair, and more surprises along the way. WV Parenting

There are currently 6,900 children in the state care in West Virgina, many of these children need a home. Burlington United Methodist Family Services is requestiong your help. National Federation of the Blind of Maryland Western Maryland Chapter

The Western Maryland chapter of the National Federation of the Blind is seeking new members as it starts its local membership drive! Hounds Around Town

Looking for a day filled with furry friends and fun? Then look no further than the Allegany County Animal Shelter's "Hounds Around Town" program, which allows individuals to sign a shelter dog out for the day. The most important thing is you are giving an adoptable shelter dog a much-needed break from the kennels and providing enrichment and socialization. Knights of Columbus Deadline

The Cumberland Council 586 is asking for support for their 72nd Annual Corn and Weiner Roast. Your generous contributions will help them provide financial support to local churches, 1st Way Pregnancy Support Center, Coats for Kids, Food for Families, Bishop Walsh Scholarships, and many other worthwhile projects. Donations are also being excepted for prizes, gift certificates, or any item that can be given away as awards. Plus there are vaious sponsorship levels available. Deadline for donations or sponsorship is Thursday, July 31st. Knights of Columbus is a non-profit organization and your contributions are tax deductible. 100% of donations will be contributed to local projects noted above. Lunar Evening in Constitution Park

The Cumberland Parks and Recreation Dept., in conjunction with the Cumberland Astronomy Club, will host a Moon observing event at Constitution Park, weather permitting, Saturday, August 2nd, 8:00PM to 10:00PM at 375 Fort Avenue, Cumberland. Telescopes for viewing the Moon will be set up by astronomy club members in the parking across from the park's pool.

Movie Night in The Park

It's Movie Night in the Park at Creekside Park Westernport, showing Disney's Tangled, Saturday, August 2nd at 8:00PM. Meet and get your photo taken with Rapunzel 8:00PM to 9:00PM. Movie, snacks and prizes (hot dogs, chips, drinks, light up toys) everything is free. 8:00PM refreshments and toys; 9:00PM movie. Please bring your own seating. This event is sponsored by Clearway and is presented by Save The Westernport Library. Rain date for this event is Friday, August 8th at 8:00PM

National Night Out

The City of Cumberland's 11th Annual National Night Out will be held Tuesday, August 5th, 5:00PM-8:00PM at 701 E. First Street. America's National Night out Against Crime is giving drugs and crime a going away party! Enjoy an evening of a free swim and a movie at Constitution Park. Swim will be 6:30PM to 8:30PM and the movie "Moana 2" will begin at dusk, about 8:45PM to 10:10PM. The evening will include events for all ages: exhibitors, demonstrations, activites, games, health & safety information, giveways, food & drinks, a selfie station, DJ music, dunk tank, fire vehichles, police vehicles, law enforcement personnel and much more. Porch Light Campaign

Throughout Cumberland the community is being asked to turn their porch lights on at dusk through dawn on Tuesday, August 5th. Increase safety and reduce criminal activity.

Family Fun Walk for Greenway Stadium

Come out and support Greenway Stadium, Saturday, August 9th with the Fmaily Fun Walk to benefit improvements for the stadium. Registration is 8:00AM to 8:55 AM and the walk will begin on the track at 9:00AM. Registration is $10 K-college and $20 for adults. T-shirts will be available to purchase.

Summer Mountian Cluster Dog Show

The Upper Valley Kennel Club is pleased to announce this year's Summer Mountian Cluster Dog Show, Thursday, August 14 through Sunday, August 17th, at the Allegany County Fairgrounds. This is an AKC, 4 day show, like the National Dog Show in Philadelphia and the Westminster Kennel Club in New York. There will also be Rally and Obedience Trails as well. Each day is it's own show ending with "Best in Show" in the late afternoon. This event is open to all for a $5.00 parking fee and no admission. Shows begin at 8:30AM each day and build to the "group" competition of 7 "Best in Group" dogs competing for Best in Show. Stuff the Bus

County United Way of Allegany County, Potomac Highlands United Way, will hold a "Stuff the Bus", Friday, August 15th, 9:00AM to 5:00PM at Walmart and Staples. This event is to provide school supplies for all students in Allegany County. If your business or organization can participate as a drop off spot for this's year's program, please call 301-722-2700 or email michele@cuw.org. School supplies needed include: backpacks, colored pencils, composition books, crayons, erasers, glue sticks/glue. highlighters, notebook paper, paper plates, pencils & pens, pencil cases, Post-It notes, reusable water bottles, scissors, thin dry-erase markets, 3 ring folders w/pockets, 3-ring binders, 1 subject spiral notebooks, 3 subject notebooks, washable markers and zip lock bags.

22nd Annual Toy Thunder Motorcycle Charity Ride-Marine Corps Reserve Toys ofr Tots

Toys for Tots of Allegany County will hold their annual Toy Thunder Motorcycle Charity Ride, Saturday, August 23rd. Registration will be from 10:00AM to 11:00AM. The Ride will begin at 11:15AM at Hurry Back Tavern, Frostburg and will end 4:00PM to 5:00PM at Outback Lounge, Frostburg. The route will be provided and will be longer than last years. Price is $15 per driver and $10 per passenger. Food, sponsored by Gianni's, will be provided for all participants. Rally T-shirts for sale at the event for $5.00. All proceeds go to the needy children of Allegany County Maryland Christmas 2025.

Cruisin' Main Street Frostburg

This Labor Day kick-off events brings families and friends together for evening picnics on porches, front yards, and parking lots. The fun of watching the car cruise is trumped only by the pleasure of the car owners who ride the street and display their buggies. Join the Classy Chassis Car Club, for this years 23rd Annual Cruisin' Main Street Frostburg, Thursday, August 28th. Last year Classy Chassis Car Club, a non-profit organization that makes donations to the community through time, talent, and treasure, gave more than $6000 to local charities, serivce groups, and worthy nonprofits.

Breakfast will include hotcakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, sausage gravy, fried potatoes, fruit cocktail, coffee and orange juice. All you can eat on the premises for $12.00 Adults and $6.00 under the age of 12. "Young Eagle" flights will not be held this year at the regular breakfasts, but will be announced later as a Young Eagle's Day. Howard's Half Marathon & 5K Run Festival

Howard's Run Festival a charity race to benefit the Allegany County Animal Shelter on Sunday, September 7th. The Howard's Half Marathan will begin at 8:00AM and the 5K Run will be at 8:15AM.
