Step inside the complex, dramatic and often shocking social world of prairie dogs through the eyes of the scientist who spent nearly half a century studying them. On Thursday, October 8, at 6:30pm, world-renowned prairie dog researcher John Hoogland, author of the definitive new book, Prairie Dogs: Ecology and Social Behavior, will present as part of the Watershed Moments Community Learning series at the Appalachian Laboratory in Frostburg, Maryland. A reception will follow.

Hosted jointly by the Cumberland and Frostburg Seventh-day Adventist Churches, the Family Fall Blast is designed to provide families with a fun, welcoming place to spend time together, meet others in the community, and enjoy an evening out — at no cost.

🎉 Children and teens ages 4–17 will have their own age-appropriate activities, including games, crafts, and opportunities to make new friends. Adults will gather for uplifting music, time to connect with others, and short inspirational messages.

Each evening’s meal is provided at no charge, with a variety of family-friendly selections planned during the week. CASA of Western MD will host their 2nd Annual Fall BINGO Blitz, Wednesday, October 14th, 6:00PM-8:30PM at CIty Place in Frostburg. The Fall themed event will feature BINGO games, vendors, themed prizes, and jar tips. Hotdogs, soft drinks, and snacks will be available for purchase. The venue is sponsored by the City of Frostburg. Early Bird tickets are available for $25 each until September 15th when prices will increase to $35. Proceeds will help CASA of Western MD recruit and train volunteers to speak for abused and neglected children. Tickets are available to purchase at givebutter.comfallbingo. A limited number of vendors with food, home, or artistic goods for sale are invited to join this event. The vendor fee is $25. Cumberland Historic Ghost Tours will conduct a one-hour walking tour of Historic Cumberland on October 17 at 6:30 PM. Guests will be greeted at the Washington Street Library by guides in period costume. Tour guide Anne Potts states, “October is a great month for a ghost tour. It comes just before All-Hallows-Eve, and everyone is in the mood for tales of spirits from the past.” The tour includes hauntings from the French and Indian War to modern day sightings. The tour is appropriate for all ages, and according to Potts, “Children on our haunted strolls seem to be the most receptive to the supernatural events.” Tickets are available immediately prior to the tour at $8 for adults and $4 for students.
