Cumberland Hometown Heroes Banner

For the second year, The Rotary Club of Cumberland is working on a banner project to honor military "Hometown Heroes" in Downtown Cumberland. The banners will be displayed on the Downtown Cumberland light posts from Memorial Day through the end of August. Each banner will include a picture of the soldier being honored, the military branch of service, and the years served. The cost of one banner is $150. Each banner is 24 x 36 inches and doubled sided. Once the banners are taken down, they will be returned to the family. The deadline to reserve a banner is Wednesday, May 4th. FrostburgFirst Launches the Frostburg Honors Banner Program

In partnership with Frostburg Serves, the Frostburg Museum, and support from the City of Frostburg, FrostburgFirst is very pleased to annoucne the Frostburg Honors Banner Program. The program goal is to recognize the community's service members in the United States Armed Forces, past and present, by displaying banners in the Frostburg Main Street District from Memorial Day 2022 through Veteran's Day 2022. The Frsotburg Honoree should be a current or previous member of the United States Armed Forces (with an honorable discharge if no longer serving), a resident of Frostburg, or an immediate family member of a current Frostburg resident. Frostburg Serves reserves the right to accept applications for Service Members with other types of connections to the City at its discretion. Applications are chosen on a first-come, first-serve basis with a maximum of 70 banners available.To purchase a banner visit downtownfrostburg.com/projects/frostburghonors to fill out an online form or download an application. FrostburgFirst Opens Applications for Pop-Up Frostburg Program

FrostburgFirst is pleased to announce the Pop-Up Frostburg program is now accepting applications for pop-up retail shops in their premises at 18 E. Main Street in downtown Frostburg. The Pop-Up Frostburg program is intended to attract small retailers to the Frostburg Arts & Entertainment District by offering a prime commercial location with rent and utilites included to give the selected businesses the opportunity to test their products and services. FrostburgFirst hopes the program will create opportunities for future business owners who have had trouble finding accessible, affordable, and flexible spaces and allow them to create, expand, and nurture their small business with relatively low risk in downtown Frostburg. Selected applicants will occupy the storefront at 18 E. Main Street in downtown Frostburg. At this time, only retail businesses are available; no food-prep will be premitted on site, although pre-made food or beverage items may be included as inventory. Accepted applicants will be solely responsible for any required health department permits or inspections and must present documentation prior to occupancy. The Pop-Up Frostburg program will accept applications on an ongoing basis for the duration of the current program round (June 1, 2022-Januray 31, 2023). National Federation of the Blind of Maryland Western Maryland Chapter

Hounds Around Town

Looking for a day filled with furry friends and fun? Then look no further than the Allegany County Animal Shelter's "Hounds Around Town" program, which allows individuals to sign a shelter dog out for the day. The most important thing is you are giving an adoptable shelter dog a much-needed break from the kennels and providing enrichment and socialization. Allegany Arts Council -  Reclaiming

The Allegany Arts Council will present a solo exhibition entitled "Reclaiming" featuring the work of artist Jeff Bahlander. A Public Opening will take place Saturday, April 30th, 6:00PM-8:00PM. Bohlander combines painting, collage, and assemblage with contempory concepts. His work is constructed layer upon layer, starting with wood, canvas or found surface. "Reclaiming" will be on display from Saturday, April 30th until Saturday, May 21st.

Out of the Watercolor Box: Western Maryland Watercolor Society

The Allegany Arts Council amd its Schwab Gallery are pleased to announce a special membership exhibit of the Western Maryland Watercolor Society. Out of the Watercolor Box will take place Saturday, April 30th-Saturday, May 21st. A Public Opening and Awards Presentation will occur on Saturday, April 30th, 6:00PM-8:00PM.

Loft 129

The long awaited return of Cumberland's own "Not Reely Dan!" One of the best Steely Dan tribute bands in the Country. Saturday, May 21st at 8:00PM, 129 Baltimore Street. "Not Reely Dan" is reuniting for a series of performances at Loft 129 starting in May and running through September. Formed by Jim Roderick, Tom Harrison, and Mark Gauthier, the group includes many of the area's finest musicians and will exculsivley feature the music of the classic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Band. 2022 Bikes of the World Collection

Donate your old bikes! Doing some Spring cleaning and have an old repairable bike in your basement or garage taking up storage space? Want to put it to good use and make a difference? Donate it to the Cumberland Area Bikes for the World collection on Saturday, May 21st. Bikes will be collected at Canal Place from 10:00AM to 12:00 noon. A voluntary $10 donation is suggested to help offset the cost of shipping bikes to both domestic and international locations. Bike donations are tax deductible and can change someone's life! They are also collecting sewing machines (not table sewing machines, please). It will be a safe and socially distance event; more details on the setup procedures will be coming. The Yet Untold Suffragette Story

Jen Hurl, Archivist of Meyersdale Area Public Library, will present a program on Monday, May 23rd at 7:30PM at the Folk Meeting House, 1711 Springs Road, Springs, PA. This event will discuss "The Yet Untold Suffragette Story", about local women involved in the suffragette movement which led to the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Lincoln's Bodyguard – Embassy Theatre

Celebrate African American Heritage with Bob O'Connor as "Lincoln's Bodyguard" at the Embassy Theatre, Sunday, May 29th from 2:00PM to 3:30PM, 49 Baltimore Street. There are over 400 Lincoln reenactors, but only one Lincoln bodyguard reenactor. Bob O'Connor has been portraying Ward Hill Lamon across the country since 2007. For persons who didn't know President Lincoln had a bodyguard or that Lamon didn't do a good job, theatre goers will find out how Lamon became his bodyguard, what a difficult job that actually was, and where Lamon was on April 14th when Mr. Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth. Memorial Day Ceremony

The Cumberland Historic Cemetery Organization will hold their annual Memorial Day ceremony, Sunday, May 29th at 2:00PM at Sumner Cemetery on Yale Street in Cumberland. The event is held at the organizations first major monument erected in 1991 in honor of six black Union Civil War soldiers. The monument is a local tourist landmark. Come learn about our local Civil War history. This event is free and open to the public.

Allegany County Library System

In observance of Memorial Day, all Allegany County Library System branches will be closed on Monday, May 30th. The libraries will resume thier current hours of operation on Tuesday, May 31st. Current hours of operation are Monday-Thursday from 11:00AM to 6:00PM and Saturdays at the Frostburg and South Cumberland Libraries from 11:00AM to 5:00PM. Library patrons can check out the eBooks & More on the library's website for 24/7 access to digital collections like hoopla, Libby, and Kanopy! Download free books, auciobooks, movies, music, and magazines through these digital collections. And as always library patrons can access their accounts through the library's homepage to renew books and other items from home.

Come out for the Dapper Dan Club of Allegany County Annual Steak Feed at the Shrine Club Picnic Grounds, Friday, June 3rd. Event begins at 5:30PM; dinner served at 6:00PM. Community Festival

Downtown Bedford Art Walk

Celebrate the Arts with Downtown Bedford inc. for the premier of their first annual Art Walk, Saturday, June 11th from 12:00PM-4:00PM. The Art Walk will showcase the extremely well-honed artistry of the exceptionally talented local artists for the public to see throughout the downtown businesses and public square. Pick up a map in the town square and explore the demostrations, experiences, music and so much more. After the event, come out to Olde Bedford Brewing Company at 5:00pm for a reception and silent auction. This event is free and no tickets are required.

North Centre Street Festival

Come on Dowontown for the North Centre Street Festival, Saturday, June 11th from 12:00PM to 9:00PM. Featuring live music, sidewalk sales, al fresco dinning in the street, and artisan vendors. Music will begin at noon on the Baltimore Street Stage with Brickyard Foley from 12:00PM-2:00PM, followed by Megan Jean & Byrne from 2:00PM-4:00PM on the Frederick Street Stage. Pronoia will move the music back to the Baltimore Street Stage from 4:00PM-6:00PM and Liam Robinette will kick off the evening's music as he opens from 6:00PM-7:00PM on the Frederick Street Stage for Gilbert Lee & The Ghosts on the Radio, who will take the Frederick Street Stage from 7:00PM-9:00PM. Deadline Public Art Project Trompe L'oeil

A call for artists, The Craft Table in Cumberland Maryland is in search of artists, artist organizations and art educators to partner with for the creation of 6 individual Trompe L'oeil windows in a visable area of downtown Cumberland, Maryland. The Craft Table is searching for artists beginning their career, will accept input and be sensitive to the historical nature to transform their building at 11 South Liberty Street to a whimsical Trompe L'oeil for the public to enjoy. The project has six individual spaces for public display. The artist will complete their work separately and the Craft Table will be responsible for attaching them to the building. The artist can select up to two (2) projects to compete for. Projects associated with art programs must be enrolled in those programs at the time of application. Space 1: 34"w x 88"h, second floor elevation, individual. Space 2: 34"w x 88"h, second floor elevation, individual. Space 3: 34"w x 88"h, second floor evelation, individual. Space 4: 34"w x 88"h, ground level. Space 5: 34"w x 88"h, ground level. Space 6: 33"w x 43"w, ground level. Deadline is August 1, 2022. Artist should submit a brief resume, RFP to include cost proposal, space applying for and a work sample. Completed submissions should be sent to craft.table21502@gmail.com.  Artists asking to be considered for the art program submission spaces should also include proof of enrollment in College or University. A local community panel will select the individual winners. Entries being submitted by an organization must be evaluated prior to consideration by the selection committee and include a letter of endorsement by the organization.
