Allegany County Library System Summer Holiday and Scheduled Closures for June

All branches of the Allegany County Library System will be closed at 2:00PM on Wednesday, June 12 to join the "Summer With Our Library Kick-Off" event at Hoffman Park in Frostburg starting at 4:00PM. In obervance of Juneteenth, ACLS libraries will be closed on Wednesday, June 19. Library patrons can check out the eBooks & More page on the library's website for access to digital collections like hoopla, Libby, and Kanopy, where users can download books, audiobooks, movies, music, and magazines. And as always, library partons can access their account through the library's homepage to renew books and other items from home. Little Free Library

Little Free Library has opened in Historic downtown Cumberland. The Minecraft-themed Little Free Library is located at the corner of Merchants Alley and South Liberty Street. Take a book, leave a book. If you see a book you would like to read, feel free to take it with you. Return it to the Little Free Library when you have finished. Give a book and help keep this Little Free Library operating by leaving a book for others to read.


WV Parenting

There are currently 6,900 children in the state care in West Virgina, many of these children need a home. Burlington United Methodist Family Services is requestiong your help. National Federation of the Blind of Maryland Western Maryland Chapter

The Western Maryland chapter of the National Federation of the Blind is seeking new members as it starts its local membership drive! Are you blind, visually impaired or know someone who is or maybe you work with the visually impaired? Consider joining the state's fastest growing chapter here in Western Maryland. Hounds Around Town

Looking for a day filled with furry friends and fun? Then look no further than the Allegany County Animal Shelter's "Hounds Around Town" program, which allows individuals to sign a shelter dog out for the day. The most important thing is you are giving an adoptable shelter dog a much-needed break from the kennels and providing enrichment and socialization. Steve Shreve Exhibition – Gilchrist Museum

The C. William Gilchrist Museum of the Arts will host an exhibition featuring Steve Shreve, Friday, June 7th – Sunday, July 7th at 104 Washington Street, Cumberland. Steve is best known for his signature metal and wood canvas art work made from salvaged industrial pieces. His outside the box mentality has always been a part of his drive to create something new and different. An Opening Reception will be held Saturday, June 8th, 5:00PM-7:00PM.

Two Short Comedies – Embassy Theatre

The Embassy Threatre presents two one act comedies by Andrew Nicholls, a playwright with a vast resume of work on television series, cartoons, and screenplays. "Yes And…" won first place at the Frostburg State One Act Festival in 2022. "In Bob We Trust", which Nicholls wrote with collaborator Darrell Vickers, will receive its world premiere on the Embassy Stage. In "Yes…", Ellie is a free-spirit actress learning improv. Her husband, Craig is an anxious, by-the-book businessman. A night of adventure begins and Craig learns to go with the flow and follows Ellie's imagination. "In Bob We Trust", the title character, Bob has a passion for collecting vinyl records. Bob decides to take his hobby to the next level and open a record shop, despite protests from his wife who is miserable at her job. Performances will be Thursday, June 13th – Saturday, June 15th and Thursday, June 20th – Saturday, June 22 at 8:00PM and Sunday, June 16th & June 23rd at 1:00PM. The Garden Club of Cumberland Garden Tour

Time for the Annual Garden Tour of the Garden Club of Cumberland for 2024, Saturday, June 22nd, 9:00AM – 2:00PM, Rain or Shine. Tickets available for $6 from club members and at gardens on day of the tour, as well as The Book Center at 15 N. Centre Street, the Downtown Dollar and Eby's Garden Center.

Community Event UPMC Kidney Dialysis Unit

Come out and support the UPMC Kidney Dialysis Unit with a night with Jody Maphis & The Night Travelers, Saturday, June 22 at 6:30PM at 1812 Brewery, 13006 Mason Road NE, Cumberland. Guests performing with The Night Travelers are Jody Maphis on guitar, Kevin Lloyd on drums and Craig Miller on percussion. This is a benefit to raise money to assist patients in the UPMC Dialysis Unit with the financial strains of the ongoing treatment.

Hear the final student and faculty concert of the 2024 Mountianside Baroque Academy, Friday, June 21st at 5:00PM at First Presbyterian Church, 11 Washington Street, Cumberland. Music of Purcell, Vivaldi (including Autumn from The Four Seasons), and others. No formal admission, but donations are accepted.

Mountainside Baroque Chamber Players

The Mountianside Baroque Chamber Players will be performing Saturday, June 22nd, 7:00PM in the  Penn Alps Chapel, 125 Casselman Road, Gransville, MD. Performanaces include  "Sweeter than Roses, Music of Purcell's England", featuring music of Purcell and his compatriots-JohnBlow and more-with soprano Kerry Holahan, violist da gamba Arnie Tanimoto, harpsichordist March Bellassai, and lutanist Lyle Nordstrom, in a musical smorgasbord of theatre music, ballad tunes, violin, recorder, viol and harpsichord solos. All in all, some of the most beautiful music at the end of the 17th century. Tickets are abailable at the door.

Amateur Radio "Field Day"

Members of the Mountain Amateur Radio Club Inc. will be participating in the national amateur radio Field Day excercise, Saturday, June 22nd and Sunday, June 23rd at Old LaVale Pool, 599 Georges Creek Blvd. Since 1933, ham operators across North America have established temporary ham radio station in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio. This event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend.
