Little Free Library

Little Free Library has opened in Historic downtown Cumberland. The Minecraft-themed Little Free Library is located at the corner of Merchants Alley and South Liberty Street. Take a book, leave a book. If you see a book you would like to read, feel free to take it with you. Return it to the Little Free Library when you have finished. Give a book and help keep this Little Free Library operating by leaving a book for others to read.


WV Parenting

There are currently 6,900 children in the state care in West Virgina, many of these children need a home. Burlington United Methodist Family Services is requestiong your help. National Federation of the Blind of Maryland Western Maryland Chapter

The Western Maryland chapter of the National Federation of the Blind is seeking new members as it starts its local membership drive! Are you blind, visually impaired or know someone who is or maybe you work with the visually impaired? Consider joining the state's fastest growing chapter here in Western Maryland. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back. The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Hounds Around Town

Looking for a day filled with furry friends and fun? Then look no further than the Allegany County Animal Shelter's "Hounds Around Town" program, which allows individuals to sign a shelter dog out for the day. The most important thing is you are giving an adoptable shelter dog a much-needed break from the kennels and providing enrichment and socialization. Bountiful Blessings

St. Paul Luthern Church, Washington and Smallwood streets, will hold Bountiful Blessings on Thursday, July 25th, from 4:00PM to 6:00PM. A photo ID is required for yearly registration. The program provides cleaning supplies, paper goods and personal hygiene items.

6th Annual Ellerslie Days

Start your weekend early at the 6th Annual Ellerslie Days, Thursday, August 26th, beginning at 6:30PM, hosted in the field behind USPS Post OFfice, 14302 Ellerslie Road, Ellerslie, MD 21529. To kick off the event there will be a Cash Bingo with the first game at 7:00PM, $20 for special and regular games pack. On Friday, July 26th there will be a Kids & Adults Power Wheels Derby, registration at 5:30PM and Derby begins at 6:00PM. The Ellerslie VFD will kick off the event with a free concert with Zona Hester, gates open at 6:30PM with band performance at 7:30PM There will be food, beverages and small games of chance, as well as axe throwing, a mechanical bull and a Foam Zone. A big celebration will take place Saturday, July 27th from 10:00AM to 10:00PM. Opening Ceremonies and Ellerslie Hall of Honor Awards will begin at 10:00AM. There will also be vendors, food and free activites, plus music by Almost Famous Band 10:30AM t-2:30PM, a petting zoo, 12:00PM-6:00PM, Kid's Candy Drop at 2:00PM, music with the Last Ride Band, 3:00PM-6:00PM, free mobile zip line 3:00PM-7:00PM and music by the Wayward Son Band, 6:30PM-9:30PM.  A Fireworks show will close out the event, beginning at 9:30PM.

The Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 426 will be holding their Fly-In/Drive-In Breakfast, Sunday, July 28th, 8:00AM-12:00PM at the Greater Cumberland Airport in Wiley Ford, WV. All you can eat breakfast will include hotcakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, sausage gravy, fried potatoes, fruit cocktail, coffee, and OJ. All you can eat on the premises for $12.00 for adults and $6.00 children under age 12. Frree "Young Eagle" airplane rides for ages 8 thru 17, weather permitting and pilots available. Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog Live!

The Embassy Theatre, in collaboration with new producer Show-Benders, will stage a weekend pop-up musical for Buffyverse Josh Wedon fans, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog Live! Friday, August 2nd and Saturday, August 3rd at 8:00PM and Sunday, August 4th at 2:30PM. Written during the Hollywood writers' strike of 2008 and produced exclusively for internet disctribution, the plot centers around Dr. Horrible (Billy), an aspiring supervillian who documents his schemes in an online blog. Filled with mayhem, romance and laughter, this narrative is engaging as well as entertaining. Directed by Hayden Davis with Musical Direction by Emery Martin. America's National Night Out Against Crime – National Night Out Cumberland

National Night Out Cumberland will Kick-Off Monday, August 5th with a Free Swim & Movie at Constitution Park Pool. Free Swim is 6:30PM-8:30PM with a fun visit from Cumberland Police. Free movie on the pool patio, "Playing With Fire", begins at dusk, 8:45PM-10:15PM. Bring a lawn chair, blankets, etc. For the Main Event, Cumberland joins 17 thousand communities nationwide for "America's National Night Out Against Crime" on Somerville Ave between 1st and 4th sts. Tuesday, August 6th, 5:00PM-8:00PM. Cumberland Police & Fire Depts. join with the community in a fun setting to stand together promoting crime awareness, safety & neighborhood unity. There will be squad cars & various emergency response vehicles, learn about safety & health topics & partake in numerous interactive family-friendly activities including DJ music, dunk tank, games, activities, food & drinks. Visit them on Facebook/National Night Out Cumberland. The community is asked to participate in the Porch Light On Campaign, Tuesday, August 6th at dusk. Neighbors throughout Cumberland and across the nation are asked to lock their doors and turn on their porch light from dusk to dawn. A campaign that began  40 years ago, National Night Out sends a powerful message about crime awareness, safety and police-community partnership. Let criminals know that the Cumberland residents are helping build a safer more caring America.

Howard's Run Festival 25K & 5K

Time to sign up for the Howard's Run Festival 25K & 5K with raceday on September 29th. Howard's 25K Run is a point-to-point race beginning at the Frostburg trailhead of the Great Allegheny Passage and finishing at the zero marker in from of the Western Maryland Station. It's downhill grade is for 13+  miles, ending with flat, paved finish. Howard's 5K Run begins at the origin "0" of the Great Allegheny Passage. Participants will traverse the last 1.55 miles of the Howard's 25K Run course to the southern edge of the Narrows before turning around and retracing their path back to Western Maryland Station. Rock the Block

If you've been jonesing for all things 80s, you want to be at downtown Cumberland's Rock the Block, Saturday, October 12th. It's all about the 1980's featuring two great bands – Mike Mountain from Frederick and the Regan Years, the East Coast original 80's tribute band out of Hagerstown, plus Frankfort Middle School's steel band. It all starts at 12 noon in Merchant's Alley off Pershing Street and runs through 7:30PM. Join in the fun with Rubik's Cube speed contest, 80's Jeopardy game and much more. Rock the Block is sponsored by The Liberty Street General Store, Allegany County Historical Society, Downtown Cumberland Business Association and Chessie Federal Credit Union.
