Color OUR World This Summer with Allegany County Library System

This summer, the Allegnay County Library System invites readers of all ages to join in the fun with Summer with Our Library 2025: Color OUR World! From June 9th through August 9th, community members can celebrate the joys of reading, learning, and exploration with programs designed for everyone-from babies to adults. Participation is easy: pick up a reading log at any library branch or download one online. Readers can log books, audiobooks, or even bedtime stories and return completed logs to their library for a prize. Children will receive a free book, teens and adults will receive a free tote bag. Every completed log is also entered into the Grand Prize Drawing, to be held on August 22, and participants may submit multiple logs to increase their chances of winning. 


Story Time In the Park

Back by popular demand, the Story Time in the Park series returns this year, starting with an outdoor story time at the Constitution Park Amphitheater on June 12th at 10:00AM. Hosted by ACLS Program Specialists, these engaging story times combine literacy and nature. Families are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs and enjoy books under the open sky. Story times will contine throuhgout the summer in parks and green spaces across Allegany County, including at the George's Creek Parklet behind the library and Creekside Park in Westernport-both of which were recently touched by flooding. "We're committed to showing up for our communitues" said Kate Metzger, Children's Coordinator for the ACLS, "We know how meaningful these momemts of connection and normalcy can be for children and their families. For those who prefer to stay cool indoors, special summer story times will also be held at the LaVale Library on Wednesday, June 4th, July 9th and July 23rd at 10:30AM. In addition to reading incentives and story times, the library will offer a full schedule of special events, including programs at Rocky Gap State Park, Read to Farm Animals at the Allegany County Fair, and more surprises along the way. National Federation of the Blind of Maryland Western Maryland Chapter

The Western Maryland chapter of the National Federation of the Blind is seeking new members as it starts its local membership drive! Hounds Around Town

Looking for a day filled with furry friends and fun? Then look no further than the Allegany County Animal Shelter's "Hounds Around Town" program, which allows individuals to sign a shelter dog out for the day. The most important thing is you are giving an adoptable shelter dog a much-needed break from the kennels and providing enrichment and socialization. Read to Farm Animals

Summer with Our Library-Read to Farm Animals, Wednesday, July 16th, 3:00PM-4:00PM at the Allegany County Fairground AG Expo. Families receive a free book to keep that they can read to the animals in the Livestock Area and stick around to enjoy the fair. Attendees may be required to pay to enter fairgrounds. Thanks to the University of Maryland Extension and 4-H Club for their particiaption and to generous sponsors American Insurance Center.

Embassy Theatre – Godspell

The Embassy Theatre will present Godspell, Friday, July 18th and Saturday, July 19th at 8:00PM and Sunday, July 20th at 2:00PM. A small group of people help Jesus tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques and hefty doses of comic timing. An eclectic blend of songs, ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, is employed as the story of Jesus' life dances across the stage. Dissolving hauntingly into the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, Jesus' message of kindness, tolerance and love vibrantly to life. Landlord Tenant Law: basics and Best Practice

Cumberland Human Relations Commission is sponsoring a FREE event at the South Cumberland Library regarding Landlord/Tenant Law Basics and Best Practices presented by Sarah Parsons, Senior Case Handling Paralegal – Public and Subsidized Housing, at Maryland Legal Aid, Thursday, July 24th, 2:00PM-4:00PM, 100 Seymour St. – Cumberland Meeting Room. The goal of this presentation is to teach participants about some of the most common landlord tenant issues individuals face. Following the course participants will have time to ask questions on the information presented. All attendees will also be  provided with literature on Maryland Legal Aid's services. Topics covered: Leases, Landlord Tenant Cases, Improtant Tips and more. National Night Out

The City of Cumberland's 11th Annual National Night Out will be held Tuesday, August 5th, 5:00PM-8:00PM at 701 E. First Street. America's National Night out Against Crime is giving drugs and crime a going away party! Enjoy an evening of a free swim and a movie at Constitution Park. Swim will be 6:30PM to 8:30PM and the movie "Moana 2" will begin at dusk, about 8:45PM to 10:10PM. The evening will include events for all ages: exhibitors, demonstrations, activites, games, health & safety information, giveways, food & drinks, a selfie station, DJ music, dunk tank, fire vehichles, police vehicles, law enforcement personnel and much more. Porch Light Campaign

Throughout Cumberland the community is being asked to turn their porch lights on at dusk through dawn on Tuesday, August 5th. Increase safety and reduce criminal activity.

Cruisin' Main Street Frostburg

This Labor Day kick-off events brings families and friends together for evening picnics on porches, front yards, and parking lots. The fun of watching the car cruise is trumped only by the pleasure of the car owners who ride the street and display their buggies. Join the Classy Chassis Car Club, for this years 23rd Annual Cruisin' Main Street Frostburg, Thursday, August 28th. Last year Classy Chassis Car Club, a non-profit organization that makes donations to the community through time, talent, and treasure, gave more than $6000 to local charities, serivce groups, and worthy nonprofits.
