FSU Cultural Events Series Survey

The Cultural Events Series of Frostburg State University invites community members to complete a survey about its perfomring arts program. One person who completes the survey will be randomly selected to win a $75 gift certificate to Giuseppe's Italian Resaurant in Frostburg. The Survey can be accessed at the CES website ces.frostburg.edu. Survey respondents will be asked to share the types of performances they prefer, what educational events they would like to experience, international art forms that should be represented in CES programming and what social topics should be explored through the arts.


Little Free Library

Little Free Library has opened in Historic downtown Cumberland. The Minecraft-themed Little Free Library is located at the corner of Merchants Alley and South Liberty Street. Take a book, leave a book. If you see a book you would like to read, feel free to take it with you. Return it to the Little Free Library when you have finished. Give a book and help keep this Little Free Library operating by leaving a book for others to read.


WV Parenting

There are currently 6,900 children in the state care in West Virgina, many of these children need a home. Burlington United Methodist Family Services is requestiong your help. They are in need of Foster Parents and loving homes. For more information on becoming a Foster Parent, please call 1-877-23-CHILD (24453), their friendly stasff are ready to talk to you!


National Federation of the Blind of Maryland Western Maryland Chapter

The Western Maryland chapter of the National Federation of the Blind is seeking new members as it starts its local membership drive! Are you blind, visually impaired or know someone who is or maybe you work with the visually impaired? Consider joining the state's fastest growing chapter here in Western Maryland. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back. The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles betwen blind people and our dreams. Hounds Around Town

Looking for a day filled with furry friends and fun? Then look no further than the Allegany County Animal Shelter's "Hounds Around Town" program, which allows individuals to sign a shelter dog out for the day. The most important thing is you are giving an adoptable shelter dog a much-needed break from the kennels and providing enrichment and socialization. Bountiful Blessings

St. Paul Lutheran Church, Washington and Smallwood streets, will hold Bountiful Blessings on Thursday, September 12, from 4:00PM to 6:00PM. A photo ID is required for yearly registration. This program provides cleaning supplies, paper goods and personal hygiene items.

Embassy Theatre – Anything Goes!

Time to board the S.S. American with Cole Porter's Anything Goes! at the Embassy Theatre, Thursday, September 12th to Saturday, September 14th at 8:00PM and Sunday, September 15th at 2:00PM. A complicated romance aboard the S.S. American traveling to London includes nightclub singers, mob bosses, stowaways, and star crossed lovers make this rollicking musical a hit with all audience members. Admission is $20 for adults and $18 for seniors/students. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketbud at https://embassy.ticketbud.com or call the box office to make reservations and guarantee seating at 240-362-7183. Doors and cafe open one hour before the performace begins.

LaVale Lions Chicken Dinner

Summer is coming to an end and that means it is time for the LaVale Lions Club's Fall Chicken BBQ at the Lions Field on Braddock Road. Event is Friday, September 13th and Saturday, September 14th, 10:00AM to 7:00PM or until each day's dinner is sold and Sunday, September 15th, 10:00AM until all the dinners are sold. They will be grilling up their famous BBQ chicken and serving up French fries, baked beans, drinks, and desserts for  your dining pleaseure. The menu includes half a chicken and a roll for $8, French fries-$2, baked beans-$2, drinks-$1, and desserts-$1 or $2. All orders are take out and credit cards are accepted. Early bird discount dinner tickets are available at Caporale's Bakery, Jolly Roger's Discount Liquors, LaVale Pharmacy, and from the LaVale Lions.

Maryland Restaurant Week

Maryland Restaurant Week kicks off its 5th year on Friday, September 13th until Sunday, September 22nd. The community of Mountian Maryland is encourage to support Allegany County restaurants to sign up. For ten days, the State of Maryland is bringing all counties and all restaurants together to celebrate and support the Restaurant industry. This event is sponsored by the Restaurant Association of Maryland and other generous sponsors.

EAA Fly-in/Drive-In

The Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 426 will be holding their Fly-In/Drive-In Breakfast, Sunday, September 29th, 8:00AM-12:00PM at the Greater Cumberland Airport in Wiley Ford, WV. All you can eat breakfast will include hotcakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, sausage gravy, fried potatoes, fruit cocktail, coffee, and OJ. All you can eat on the premises for $12.00 for adults and $6.00 children under age 12. Frree "Young Eagle" airplane rides for ages 8 thru 17, weather permitting and pilots available. Howard's Run Festival 25K & 5K

Time to sign up for the Howard's Run Festival 25K & 5K with raceday on September 29th. Howard's 25K Run is a point-to-point race beginning at the Frostburg trailhead of the Great Allegheny Passage and finishing at the zero marker in from of the Western Maryland Station. It's downhill grade is for 13+  miles, ending with flat, paved finish. Howard's 5K Run begins at the origin "0" of the Great Allegheny Passage. Participants will traverse the last 1.55 miles of the Howard's 25K Run course to the southern edge of the Narrows before turning around and retracing their path back to Western Maryland Station. Rock the Block

If you've been jonesing for all things 80s, you want to be at downtown Cumberland's Rock the Block, Saturday, October 12th. It's all about the 1980's featuring two great bands – Mike Mountain from Frederick and the Regan Years, the East Coast original 80's tribute band out of Hagerstown, plus Frankfort Middle School's steel band. It all starts at 12 noon in Merchant's Alley off Pershing Street and runs through 7:30PM. Join in the fun with Rubik's Cube speed contest, 80's Jeopardy game and much more. Rock the Block is sponsored by The Liberty Street General Store, Allegany County Historical Society, Downtown Cumberland Business Association and Chessie Federal Credit Union.
