Budget Will Be Hot Topic In Annapolis
The Maryland Legislature opens this Wednesday in Annapolis for its yearly 90-day session and the main issue taken up will be the state’s budget. Facing a growing deficit in coming years of over a billion dollars, Senator Mike McKay says the concern goes beyond what happens this year – money coming in doesn’t cover what’s going out…
“It’s the structural deficit that really makes a difference because those out years – the General Assembly has actually overspent compared to the revenues that they’re expected to receive.”
What actions will be taken this session in the House and Senate to address spending and revenue generation are also left to be determined…
“It’s going to be a very interesting year, being an election year, that the majority party is not going to want to raise taxes or fees. So that means there’s going to be some programs being cut.”
