Former Cumberland Police Captain James Burt pled guilty to one count of Misconduct in Office and was sentenced to two years of incarceration with all but 30 days suspended. Burt will also be on supervised probation for three years. According to the plea agreement, Burt routinely applied pain compliance pressure points on a female police officer without warning as well as kissed the victim on the neck in an enclosed stairwell without her consent. During the sentencing, Judge Timothy Finan remarked that it was curious that someone with the skills Mr. Burt has would show such poor judgement – he showed a lack of judgement on at least one occasion, likely more.
