One Fair Wage Bill Has House Hearing

Kathy Cornwell

Tipped workers along with education and healthcare workers were present at a hearing in Annapolis on House Bill 1229 that seeks to raise Maryland’s minimum wage to $25 per hour. Delegate Vaughn Stewart sponsors the bill that would raise the wage and put the choice on referendum…

“One – let’s raise the wage to something that people can actually live on. Two – let’s make it apply to everyone. No more carve-outs that were based on racist segregation, or Jim Crow, or other practices. Let’s bring everybody into the tent and insure that everybody can be paid that living wage.”

Paul Lemley who represents the Maryland State Education Association spoke for school bus drivers, instructional assistants, custodians and others who work in schools…

“The vast majority of education support professionals do not earn a living wage in Maryland. Over 12,000 support professionals work in our schools for less than $25 an hour, often for only 180 days a year.”
