At-Will Employment Hurts Worker Rights In Maryland

Maryland workers would have improved job security under a just-cause standard, rather than the state’s current employment at-will system. Kathy Lara is a policy analyst with the Oregon Center for Public Policy. She says most Maryland workers can be fired for almost any reason, or for no reason at all. She says many union workers and most public sector employees, CEOs and other high-level executives have more security with just-cause standards…
“These high-level employees, they understand that without a contract, their positions are precarious. And so I think that same should also be applied to the everyday person as well who’s working retail, a bus driver, gas station attendants, what have you.”
