Bill Mandating Smoke Detectors Signed Into Law

One of the championed bills in both chambers of the recent Maryland General Assembly, the Jillian and Lindsay Weiner Short-Term Rental Safety Act, was signed into law this week with the girls’ mother, Alisa Weiner present. The legislation was inspired by tragedy in 2022 when Jillian and Lindsay Weiner were killed in a fire at a short-term rental unit in New York that did not have functioning fire alarms. Governor Moore said he was glad their mother made her voice known…
“This bill requires fire detection and prevention equipment in every short term rental in the state of Maryland. It mandates annual inspections, it insures accountability, because our job is to make sure people are protected in their homes, in their communities, and everywhere they are.”
