Shade Tree Commission Seeking Coordination Help

Cumberland’s Shade Tree Commission is looking for a part-time assistant who could help the City Arborist in implementing the Urban Tree Canopy Plan. The plan to increase city’s tree canopy originated in 2011, but commission member Frank Clark told the city council that when the plan was developed, the existing tree canopy was 27% and it has not changed in the last 15 years…
“One of their goals was to increase it by 2020—which has passed—up to 33% and then by 2030 at least up to 45%. They do these aerial studies of the tree canopy, and this organization called the Chesapeake Bay Land Use and Land Cover said that there has been no increase. There may have actually been a decrease.”
