Sheriff Says State Law Violates Federal Law

The Community Trust Act that became law without Governor Wes Moore’s signature is drawing quick pushback from Maryland sheriffs. A lawsuit has been filed on behalf of 17 sheriffs in the state seeking an injunction. Allegany County Sheriff Craig Robertson tells WCBC the new law forbids cooperation between law officers and ICE agents contradicts federal statutes…
“We’re actually violating federal law. The legislation has put the sheriffs in the middle – more of a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation.”
The state’s sheriffs met with Moore in an attempt to get the bill vetoed…
“The governor admitted and told us that there was flaws and there were things in this bill he did not agree with. We reached out and asked him to please then veto the bill. If it’s not a good bill, then let’s work on a good bill.”
