In this election year, the term “transparency” has been a buzzword locally, especially in connection with the Allegany County Commissioners race.  Cumberland Mayor Ray Morriss gives much of the credit to city attorney Mike Cohen for keeping the city council out of such controversies…

“Our City Solicitor Mike Cohen is very adamant about making sure that whenever we go in to a closed session, that it’s all documented properly and that they’re handled the way they should be.”

Mayor Morriss added that open work sessions allow citizen attendance and he noted that sunshine laws are part of the training for elected office…

“That’s one of the first things when you come on as the mayor or on the city council is that they offer you is the training on the Open Meetings Act.”
