County Receives Extra Funds to Rehabilitate GAP Trail Tunnel

Allegany County received $4.1 million from the state’s Carbon Reduction Program for the rehabilitation of the Borden Tunnel on the GAP Trail in Frostburg. These funds are in addition to $3.6 million granted by the State Highway Administration in 2022. With a one-million-dollar match from the County itself, the commissioners accepted a bid for the project of $8.7 million from Carl Belt, Inc. Commissioner Bill Atkinson thanked the Department of Public Works for their efforts at Thursday’s commission meeting…
“I don’t know how you pulled that off to get an extra four-million-dollars out of that program, but I think it just shows that even the state recognizes how important the Great Allegheny Passage is not only to our region but to the state as a whole.”
