State Teachers Start at $60,000 Per Year

The State of Maryland wants all public school teachers to start with a minimum salary of $60,000 and Allegany County has complied with that goal.  In fact, Dr. Michael Martirano, Superintendent of Schools, told WCBC that the starting salary in the county is $61,800…

“We think we’ll have between 30 and 40 vacancies this year; we’re already filling those. That will give us a major recruiting tool leverage on all this so we’re real happy about that.”

Dr. Martirano noted that 85% of the county budget is for personnel and research backs that investment…

“Put your priorities in place and what we know about education is the most important factor in insuring kids are taken care of, that they get a quality education, is the quality of our teachers.”
