Rabid Cat in Lavale

The Allegany County Health Department reports that a second cat has tested positive for rabies – this one a black male cat found in the area of Helman Drive in LaVale, MD. The test results were received late Thursday, August 14. This stray cat was seen among others in the same area that may have been exposed to the virus. Anyone who believes they may have come into contact with this or any stray cats in that area should reach out to the health department at 301-759-5138 or 301-759-5245. This latest case comes just one day after a separate, unrelated case was confirmed in Cumberland, MD on Wednesday, underscoring the importance of staying away from feral or sickly animals. Individuals are urged to report any sightings of cats or other animals showing signs of rabies. Symptoms of rabies include changes in an animal’s behavior such as unusual friendliness or aggressiveness; nocturnal animals being unusually active during the day; and staggering, excessive drooling, or even paralysis. If you have had any contact with a feral cat, please contact your local health department immediately. Rabies virus presents life-threatening health risks to both humans and animals.
