Machine Shop Open For Tours This Weekend

Jim Zamagias

Heritage Days is by far one of the longest-running events in Allegany County. Again this weekend, Washington Street and the surrounding area will come alive with entertainment and food that organizer Dave Williams says now goes back generationally…

“If you talk about 56 years of Heritage Days, there are people who remember it as children who are now retired. That’s a pretty long run for a community activity, so the event itself has some tradition.”

Included this year is the historic Zimmerla Machine Shop on North Mechanic Street. Under new ownership as Allegany Machine Works,  its original machinery is mostly intact and will be open for tours during this year’s festival…

“And it’s now reopened as a machine shop and it’s just wonderful. So a tour of that machine shop is literally like going back to the 1940s or 50s.”
