McKay Says Agency Cuts May Not Be Enough

When lawmakers go back to Annapolis in January, they will be starting the session faced with a growing state budget deficit. Maryland’s Department of Legislative Services projected a structural gap of over $2.5 billion. The state budget department has asked state agencies for a 3% cut and be prepared for up to 10% reductions. “Instead of cutting costs or cutting programs, I think they’re going to shift the costs to the counties and say we balanced it, but they just put it on the backs of the counties and in Western Maryland, we can’t afford it.”
