Schools Doing Better With Attendance

Statewide, schools in Maryland are doing better at cutting the amount of chronic absenteeism among students. Since 2022, the rate of chronic absences has dropped 8 points to 22.8%. State School Superintendent Dr. Carey Wright described what schools consider chronic…
“A student is considered chronically absent if he or she misses 10% or more of the school year. That may not sound like a lot, but it translates to about two days a month or 18 days a year. That’s almost a full month of school.”
Wright said days missed early in the year set up a bad outcome…
“Research shows that a child who has missed just two days of school in September is on track to be chronically absent by June.”
