On May 1, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served six Arrest Warrants on David Martin Boyd. The warrants were issued when Boyd failed to appear in court for six different cases. The charges for those cases include, Assaults, Dangerous Weapon Conceal, Disorderly Conduct, and Use Credit Card of Another. Boyd was seen before a District Court Commissioner and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center, held without bond. The timing of the Choose Cumberland relocation package hurt some hopefuls in their attempts to move to the area as many applicants lost remote work as an option. As a result, there are still openings for the package that offers up to $20,000 to relocate to Cumberland. Changes are coming to freshwater fishing license and trout stamp fees in Maryland. The rising costs of maintaining conservation efforts and angler programs has forces the first rate adjustment in almost 20 years. The price of freshwater fishing licenses has not changed in 18 years, while trout stamp costs have been steady for 33 years. A new resident license for freshwater fishing will now be $32 and the trout stamp an additional $20. Other rates apply for non-residents.
On Friday, May 2, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Oldtown Road from Winifred Road to White Oaks Avenue will be closed to traffic for an emergency leak repair. Water service will be interrupted on Oldtown Road from Mullen Street to White Oaks Avenue.
On May 1, 2025 at approximately 4:00 PM the Cumberland City Police responded to East Elder Street for an assault. Upon arrival officers spoke to several involved parties. Officers learned there was a mutual assault between four roommates over financial issues. Officers placed Gregory Bailey and Joseph Bailey under arrest without issue. As officers were attempting to arrest John Arlott Sr, he began to flee. John Arlott Jr attempted to aid him in avoiding arrest. During last night’s Allegany County Commissioners meeting, an outline of the FY 2026 budget was presented which included the $0.02 property tax increase. However, the Commissioners voted against increasing property tax altogether. Instead, they are prepared to pull the amount from the County’s fund balance. This would increase the total pulled from the fund to about $2.9 million instead of $1.8 million. Cumberland’s first Memorial Day parade in many years now has a Grand Marshal. The announcement came Thursday morning on WCBC’s Dave Norman program. West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey has signed the Power Generation and Consumption Act into law. He signed the bill in Point Pleasant where a 2,000 acre data center campus is slated for construction, a type of project that Morrisey says the new law is designed to attract. “We have a lot of competitive advantages. We have abundant resources like coal and natural gas and water. We have strategic locations for data security. We have a regulatory framework that’s second to none.”
The Evergreen Heritage Center has been honored with the Maryland Historical Trust Award for Excellence in Community Impact.
