AG Brown Urges Halt on ICE Facility due to Environmental Concerns

Maryland Attorney General
Jim Zamagias

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been asked to halt plans to convert a vacant warehouse in Washington County into a detention facility.  Due to unresolved concerns about the project’s environmental impacts, Attorney General Brown says a full Environmental Impact Statement is necessary because the warehouse is not a detention center by design…

“A facility this size would generate nearly four times more wastewater than this site was designed for, risking sewage overflows on the property and backups throughout the surrounding community.  Increased traffic, air quality impacts, and the burden of local emergency services were never assessed.”
