Bill Could Be Beneficial To Area Attracting Data Centers

A bill from Senator Mike McKay had a hearing Tuesday in the Education, Energy, and Environmental committee that could make it easier for data centers to locate in Western Maryland. SB26 creates provisions for large energy users to build and operate their own off-grid power systems. McKay said Consumer Regulated Electricity is a no-risk option for consumers…
“Since CRE systems are off-grid and serve only commercial or industrial loads, there is no impact on residential customers who remain fully served by existing utilities.”
McKay said there have been data center operators looking at the county, but there is not enough available power…
“The Luke Mill – right now, as I understand it, for a data center I need approximately 300meg of energy. I can only with working with West Virginia at that particular site, can provide about 100meg.”
