Tuesday’s Cumberland City Council meeting once again saw a local business owner asking the council to address pedestrian safety downtown.  Business owner Chris Myers said he has sent the city letters requesting the council address issues of pedestrian safety in construction zones, but has received the answer that people should just walk around the work project areas…

“You have no Work zone requirements. You have nothing that says anything about coneage, barriers, anything to prevent a pedestrian walking in an active Work zone. If they’re working above you and you walk through that area, and they drop something you have nothing in your ordinance to protect citizens, especially those with disabilities.”

Myers told the council that telling people to “just walk around the construction” isn’t enough…

“That is not an ADA-compliant statement, gentlemen. That’s illegal. You cannot force a citizen into a roadway to walk around a piece of equipment. That is not how that works, I’m sorry.”
