County To Amend Code For Speed Cameras

The Allegany County Commissioners have taken the first steps of amending county code to allow for the use of speed monitoring systems. Attorney Lee Beeman provided detail on what the change would do…
“Authorize the Sheriff of Allegany County to have the authority to determine the locations of where speed monitoring systems are to be installed in Allegany County, again limited by 31809 of the transportation article. And then it would additionally establish a designation of school zones in Allegany County for purpose of speed monitoring systems.”
LaVale resident Kit Pepper Lescallette questioned whether only the Sheriff should be involved in making location decisions, saying he is difficult to contact and that the commissioners or school board should also be involved…
“If I have a camera in my neighborhood and I think it’s creating an issue, it’s hard to go to the Sheriff because he’s busy and he doesn’t have public meetings to express concern. And people are going to come here and express concern to you and you’re going to say, well, the Sheriff does that.”
