DPSCS statement on Homicide Investigation at Hagerstown Correctional Center

The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services confirmed that a suspected homicide occurred at the Maryland Correctional Training Center in Hagerstown. The incident is under investigation by the Maryland State Police and the Intelligence and Investigative Division. The housing unit where the incident took place was fully staffed at the time. Four correctional officers wearing body cameras were assigned to the unit, as required by the staffing plan established by the Department and union. When staff learned of the incident, officers from other tiers immediately responded to the scene as well. DPSCS Communications Director, Yianni Varonis stated “The Department takes every act of violence within its facilities extremely seriously, and the safety and security of our staff and incarcerated population remain our highest priorities.”
