When Governor Wes Moore’s initial fiscal year 2027 budget arrived this year, many were surprised that the Western Maryland Economic Development Fund, also known as the Senator George Edwards Fund, was not included. However the District 1 delegation was not going to accept that. The final budget now includes $8 million for the fund.  Senator Mike McKay tells WCBC the governor especially recognized the importance of the fund to the region…

“On Friday, the governor dropped an additional, this is his second supplemental – it had a variety of things in it but one of the great things was that he added an additional $1 million dollars to the George Edwards Fund. So now we’re sitting at $9 million dollars for the George Edwards Western Maryland Economic fund.”

McKay said getting the important monies restored was a team effort in the District 1 and 2 delegations…

“From Delegate Buckel to Delegate Hinebaugh, Delegate Baker, myself, adding in the District 2 delegation under Corderman, Wivell, Valentine, and Schindler. It’s a banner day for Western Maryland.”
