EPA Delays New Rules for Coal Wastewater at Plants in MD

Changes at the Environmental Protection Agency delayed tougher wastewater treatment regulations at coal-fired power plants. As a result, coal-opponent Earthjustice says more than 300 tons of pollutants will enter waterways across the country, including from Brandon Shores in Anne Arundel County that is to remain open until 2029. Thom Cmar with Earthjustice says the EPA delay will be detrimental to the environment…
“This is a massive handout to the coal power industry. It’ll cost all of us in the long run because it will encourage more expensive, dirty coal plants to continue operating for longer—and it will mean more arsenic, mercury and lead in our waterways.”
