FAMLI Costs City And County

Businesses across Maryland are getting acquainted with the new state-mandated Family and Medical Leave Insurance program.  All employers must participate in the program, including counties and cities. Costs for the program to the county may be $200,000 while Cumberland will have to invest $100,000 for the coming year. Mayor Ray Morriss said the actual cost depends on program use…

“Depends on how much leave people start taking. You know, with a lot ours, we have collective bargaining agreements with the union and there were limitations on FLA and things like that but the state has obviously set the levels up higher.’

There was an attempt to have municipalities taken out of the program…

“The Maryland Municipal League was having conversations with the state up until two weeks ago about getting exemptions for the municipalities because of our collective bargaining agreements and things like that.’
