Feldstein Recalls Summer Camp Memories

South Branch Potomac River
Kathy Cornwell

One of America’s great traditions is going to summer camp, even Camp Granada in the Allan Sherman song.  Local historian Al Feldstein shared with WCBC that he attended Camp Cliffside in Springfield, West Virginia, a camp that dates back many decades…

“I’m sure people know his last name, I just know him by Uncle Bill. He ran it. And a lot of people around here from my age went down there over the summer. You would gather around, tell ghost stories around the campfire each night. I remember the outhouse, we called it a 3-holer.”

Feldstein added that there were plenty of activities and lifetime memories made.

“In order to pass the swimming test, you had to swim across the Potomac River and one of the camp counselors was in a canoe next to you. I think the counselor next to me kept hitting me with an oar, I’m not sure. And I remember my mother sewing my name in the back of my Fruit of the Loom.”
