Governor Signs Bills Prohibiting 287-g Agreements

Kathy Cornwell

Emergency legislation passed by the General Assembly was signed into law on Tuesday by Governor Wes Moore. The bills – HB444 and SB245 prohibit State and local jurisdictions from deputizing officers for federal civil immigration enforcement.  Governor Moore said Maryland refuses to blur lines between state and federal authority in ways that undermine the trust between law enforcement and communities…

“What this bill does do is to draw a very clear line. It says that in Maryland we defend constitutional rights, and we defend constitutional policing, that we defend and support the trained law enforcement in our state and we will not allow them to be deputized by agencies that do not hold the same standards.”
