Governor’s Redistricting a Response to National Politics

Jim Zamagias

The idea of redrawing Maryland’s Congressional Maps is not one that Governor Wes Moore put atop his agenda when he ran for office in 2022.  However, watching states like Texas redraw maps to favor Republicans and considering 25,000 Marylanders have lost federal jobs, Moore told WCBC that forming the Redistricting Commission had to be done.

“Mid-decade redistrictring is not something I believe in; it’s not a core tenet on why I ran for office but it is something that I’m watching as this is happening.”

The chairperson of the commission, U.S. Senator Angela Alsbrooks, is proud of the commission’s work, which now goes to the Maryland General Assembly.

“We did forward a map to the governor and that process is continuing.  It’s a democratic process and I’m very proud that we are right now responding in a way that will preserve the voting rights and voices of Marylanders.”
