On October 24, 2026, Allegany County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a theft in progress at the Walmart on Country Club Mall Road in LaVale, Maryland.

Deputies arrived at Walmart after being notified of two male suspects who had stolen merchandise and exited the store. Upon arrival, deputies located Melvin Nester Jr. and Benjamin Farmer, who matched the descriptions provided by Walmart Loss Prevention. Both suspects attempted to flee in opposite directions but were apprehended by deputies.

During the investigation, deputies recovered a total of $746.56 in stolen merchandise. The property was found abandoned near a cart return and within a backpack belonging to one of the suspects.

Further investigation led to the discovery and seizure of illegal drugs. A search of Melvin Nester Jr. revealed a digital scale with suspected cocaine residue and a glass pipe containing suspected cocaine residue. Additionally, deputies recovered a clear plastic baggie containing a quantity of suspected crack cocaine, as well as a clear capsule and another clear plastic baggie containing suspected fentanyl. These substances were found along the path Nester had taken as he attempted to flee the scene.

Both Nester and Farmer were arrested and transported to the Allegany County Detention Center. They face charges related to theft and possession of controlled dangerous substances, including crack cocaine and fentanyl.
