Many bills are still moving through the legislature in Annapolis, but one of the more entertaining ones would name a state shark for Maryland. Similar to former Delegate Kevin Kelly’s legislation in 2001, which designated the calico cat as the state feline, Senator Jack Bailey is urging lawmakers to make the prehistoric megalodon shark the state’s official fish. Harper Cole, an 11-year-old student from Ellicott City, gave testimony for the choice…

“What makes the megalodon especially cool for Maryland is that fossils of its teeth have actually been found along the Chesapeake Bay. Maryland already has many state symbols like the Baltimore Oriole as our state bird. Adding a state shark would be exciting.”
