MD Bill Would Ease Homeownership Transfers after Death

Kathy Cornwell

A bill in the Maryland General Assembly would establish a Transfer-on-Death deed option for Marylanders.  Senate Bill 651, co-sponsored by Republican Senator Mike McKay is now with the House Judiciary Committee.  The legislation would allow transfer of property after a death to others without the need for a will, which many Maryland seniors lack.  Sara Westrick with AARP Maryland says a will may indicate who a person wants to have their home, but it doesn’t actually transfer the deed to them…

“One of the benefits to this legislation is that it will allow people who may not have the means to prepare a will to still ensure that the possession of their home will pass to the people they intend.”
