Mechanic Street Assault Arrest

On Tuesday, April 14th, 2026, the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 100 block of Mechanic St for a report of an assault with a firearm. Upon arrival, officers contacted a male victim who advised that he had been involved in a verbal altercation inside a nearby apartment. During the altercation, the suspect produced a handgun and threatened to assault the victim. The victim escaped the apartment unharmed and contacted the police. During the subsequent investigation, authorities developed a suspect and executed a search warrant, recovering a handgun. As a result, Kwame Aswad Gilcrest, 48, of Cumberland, MD, was arrested and transported to Police Headquarters. He later appeared before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance and was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held without bond.
