META’s recently announced settlement with 29 states will cost the social media giant over $17 billion dollars. Both Maryland and West Virginia were plaintiffs in the case. Maryland may see $327 million dollars over the next ten years while West Virginia is looking at $114 million. Attorney General for West Virginia, J.B. McCuskey said the settlement will bring changes to how children use social media…

“What META did is they lost sight of who their customer was and started treating their customers as the product. And in this country, we don’t allow companies to treat our children as a product for whatever it wants and we believe that $17 billion dollars and $114 million for West Virginia, along with really sweeping changes to the way their platforms interact with children is a great result not just for West Virginia but for families all across this country.”
