Monument Program Wins Grant to Highlight Stories of Appalachian VA

Monuments Across Appalachian Virginia is dedicated to protecting and highlighting stories in Virginia’s Appalachian region and has received a $5 million grant from Mellon Foundation to continue its work.  The project has created nine monuments across the region highlighting the histories, stories and challenges of people living in Appalachia, according to program’s co-leader, Emily Satterwhite…

“It is an opportunity for people in Appalachia who take care of their communities and their histories to have some authority over how they get to tell their stories in public places.  There are people who have been protecting these stories and preserving these stories in oral traditions. We’re really enabling people to share.”
