Oakland Man Arrested for Assault and Drug Charges

On March 14, 2026, deputies from the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office responded to M Street, Mountain Lake Park for a reported assault involving a firearm. Investigation revealed that Robert Eugene Johnson III, 39, of Oakland, pointed a handgun at an individual at a residence before fleeing the scene prior to deputies’ arrival.
Deputies located Johnson a short time later and placed him under arrest. A handgun was later recovered as a result of the investigation.
A subsequent search warrant was executed at a residence on Sand Flat Road by Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division, Detectives with the Narcotics Task Force, Patrol Deputies, and the Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigator. During the search, Detectives recovered an additional firearm, a sawed-off shotgun, ammunition, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia.
Robert Eugene Johnson III was charged with the following offenses:
• First-Degree Assault
• Second-Degree Assault
• Reckless Endangerment
• Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person
• Possession of Ammunition by a Prohibited Person
• Handgun on Person
• Use of a Firearm During a Violent Crime
• Possession of Methamphetamine
• Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
Johnson was transported to the Garrett County Detention Center where he is currently being held pending a bond hearing. “Thanks to the quick response and coordinated efforts of our deputies and detectives, multiple firearms and illegal drugs were removed from the community,” said Sheriff Meyers. “Their work helped ensure the safety of those involved and the citizens of Garrett County.”
