Paint Tax Now in Effect In Maryland

Kathy Cornwell

If you’re doing spring projects around your home, expect to pay a little more for paint. Effective April 1, Maryland has instituted a new paint tax of $1.50 per gallon or $2.25 for 5-gallon containers of paint.  The money is supposed to go toward paint recycling efforts, but lawmakers are asking questions, as the non-profit recycler is not registered in the state. Senate Minority Whip Justin Ready spoke to WBAL Radio about the tax…

“The money goes to this non-profit group, set up by the paint corporations, that allegedly will create recycling programs, and conveniently by the way, part of it is like we’ll set something up in every store for people to take their paint back to so it’s a benefit to them to get you back in the store to return your paint. And I don’t begrudge them that, but the taxpayers shouldn’t be funding that.”
