Pirate Great Elroy Face Dies
Elroy Face, the man often credited with creating the modern role of closer, has died at 97. Face is a member of the Pirates Hall of Fame and he saved three wins for the Pirates in their 1960 World Series triumph over the New York Yankees. Face was famous for using the forkball as an out pitch. In 1959 he recorded an 18-1 record as a reliever. Face also was a familiar figure in Cumberland, visiting Potomac Video on North Mechanic Street decades ago and being interviewed on WCBC Radio.
