The danger of flash floods, mainly in the Georges Creek area, prompted the Allegany County Public School system to make the decision to cancel classes for Wednesday. Other private schools in the area followed suit, suspending school for the day as well.  The county’s decision came Tuesday evening – county schools superintendent Dr. Michael Martirano told WCBC they were erring on the side of caution…

“You know, this is basically the same conditions that we had last year on the day that we experienced the horrific flooding in Westernport. Everyone’s really concerned, obviously, with those same sort of conditions. So we made the decision proactively not to repeat last year. And the amount of trauma that we experienced in the community – a lot of parents started calling yesterday. We had concern about that as well. So I always err on the side of caution and safety for our students and staff and community so that we would not have a repeat of last year.”
