State Promoting Unclaimed Property
Old bank accounts. Safe deposit boxes. Life insurance policies. Just a few examples of what the State of Maryland is stewarding in its unclaimed property fund. Last year, Maryland was able to return over $121 million dollars in unclaimed property to rightful owners. The state maintains a website to search for unclaimed property at claimitmd.gov. State Comptroller Brooke Lierman said the state must steward such property indefinitely…
“In Maryland, most property is considered abandoned after 3 years, but for virtual currency, it’s five. Once the state receives these funds, we in the office of the state comptroller hold them forever until they’re claimed by the rightful owner or their heirs.”
